On Thursday, January 26th the Abbott-Watson Magic Club hosted their first meeting at FAB Magic in Colon. Not even the lousy weather could turn away these die hard magic fans! For 3 1/2 hours we talked magic, shared magic ideas and began planning for the future. We even had our first birthday celebration! Charter member Ron Carnell was surprised with a beautiful cake and we also learned that Mike Moorian also celebrated a birthday!

All in all it was a great time and we look forward to our next meeting February 23rd. Theme of meeting is Children's Magic! Plus, during the summer here at FAB Magic we will be sponsoring magic shows every summer on Saturdays at noon. With the help of our talented club members we promise to provide solid magical entertainment every week! If you are in the area please come see us!

Wishing all of you a wonderful and safe New Year! 2011 has been one terrific year and looking forward to 2012 with lots of new FAB Magic creations - expansion of our current facility - renovation of our current showroom - new store in Indianapolis next spring - magic festival in August - I am having the time of my life and enjoying every second of it!

I just wish there were more hours in the day to do everything so my New Years resolution is to MAKE it happen not only here at FAB Magic but also in COLON where we as a community will once again reinforce claim to our title "Magic Capital Of The World!" Moving forward given today's economic climate is a challenge to every small town across the United States. However, as the new chairman of the Colon Downtown Development Association, I see nothing BUT positives for this community. It's going to be a team effort to revitalize the downtown and it can and will be done. Everyone on this board understands and loves this community - they want to see it move forward - and so do the citizens of Colon.

Plans are being made NOW to invest in the future - our schools are being remodeled, our new community park is making HUGE strides and it is evident pride is becoming contagious throughout the village. As we enter 2012 we take time to reflect on 2011 and plan for 2012 and beyond. No smoke - no mirrors - no illusions - just hard work and dedication. The next time you are in the area please stop and look around...see what Colon is up to!

With the holiday season upon us we haven't had much time to take any time off. It's been a wonderful year at FAB Magic and we have lots of surprises in store. Two of which are the new books we will be releasing summer of 2012.

With special permission from the Monk Watson family we are assembling a book on the life story of Monk Watson. The hardbound book will be chocked full of great pics and memorable stories of this legendary performer who lived in Colon his entire life. Watch here for details.

Also, summer of 2012, "A Magical Village" book on the history of magic and magicians in Colon with an accompanied souvenir collectors edition of the new FAB Magic catalog. PLUS ...watch this blog for exciting information about our expansion project.

I will be performing at each of the home games next year during half time - we will be incorporating Colon High School staff throughout and it is going to be a great time! I have a great new assistant in the high school mascot and fun things are in the works.

Christmas In Colon

Christmas in Colon was a huge success. So much fun to see hundreds of folks visiting our village for what is quickly becoming an annual event. The kids thoroughly enjoyed Krag Ryal's free magic show here in the shop.

Cheryl & Lilly worked hard all week long to create a festive atmosphere here at FAB and with the Christmas music playing in the background the setting was just perfect. Nostalgic Necessities set up 'shop' in the front part of the store with their big fluffy bunny rabbit - it was - a wonderful time. Thanks to all of you that came and we hope to see you here in the magic capital of the world for our 3rd annual Christmas In Colon event.

175 Years and Counting . . .

I fell in love with Colon, Michigan over 45 years ago and it's history is so fascinating. So you can imagine how excited I was when we were given a collection of hundreds of documents and photographs from Colon's early years. Thanks to Leonard Burnham for everything! What a find - a letter from A. Shelhaus, who founded Colon in 1831 - handwritten deeds and so much more including graduation books, memorabilia and such. We will be posting these items on our soon to be revamped website - www.colonmichigan.org - which gives you an insight into Colon's wonderful history.

So much history and so little time to spend this day but thanks to Denny Laub for the great tour. Halloween in the Magic Capital

Halloween is my favorite time of the year and it's special when you see your grandkids all dressed up and having so much fun. Above Grandma getting Lilly ready as cowgirl to lasso the streets of Colon for some goodies and below is our newest grandbaby, Nadia, who wanted to show Riley how much cuter she was - of course she decided to take a cat ---er ---bunnynap while this pic was taken.

The streets of Colon were full of hundreds of little goblins and goblinettes. The costume judging contest was loads of fun at the elementary school. It was fun being the emcee and kudos go the Colon Lions Club for passing out the awards (and the doughnuts and cider) - We'll do it all again next year God willing. Hope you and your family had a safe Halloween as well.

Where To Put It All!

It's been a busy month here at FAB and I just realized I haven't updated my blog for a month! First and foremost Cheryl and I became grandparents for the third time - a little magic brought Nadia Evelyn into our lives. Mom,dad and Nadia all doing well. Gee...do I feel old!

Secondly, we acquired a huge magic estae with over 5,000 items and having a difficult time trying to find a place to put it all. We have some great deals on like new magic,dvd's and books. Watch our Private Estate Sale for hundreds of items added weekly!

2012 - The Year of The 'Winners'

What's that you say?? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm - interesting stuff! We are already preparing for Magic Week 2012 and what is in store is ..well..we can't even believe it ourselves but the excitement is bulding. Only a few select members of the FAB staff have been working on this for over a year and the details are finalized but the announcement is still coming....... all I can say is stay tuned!

It is indeed fitting that the Magic Capital Of The World plays host to a magic organization. We have petitioned the International Brotherhood of Magicians for a new IBM Ring here in Colon. With the blessing of the Percy Abbott & Monk Watson family - it will be known as the "Abbott/Watson Ring" - More details later but all of us who not only love magic but it's historical significance here in Colon and are very proud to announce this newly formed 'ring'. There is one heck of a magic show going on in heaven. It's a daily occurrence - however now they have a new 'emcee' - my old friend Hank Moorehouse is there to watch over the shows and make sure the acts are staying on time. He's smiling and having a good time - magic was his life. Still is...I heard he 'died' Friday - nobody ever 'dies' - only on stage.

Hank just passed on to a new stage with a new spotlight that is eternal. He is getting ready to introduce Harry, Johnsstone, Crandall, Fox and the rest of the gang.

Hank was the first 'professional' magician I ever met in 1974. I had this strange notion of putting together a magic convention in Indiana back then - I was only 14. Hank was the first to volunteer his services as emcee.

That friendship has lasted for over 37 years. He told me backstage at a Michigan Magic Day event in Ann Arbor, "Magic is my life,my hobby, my passion - I wouldn't have it any other way.."

We wouldn't either my friend....rest in peace

Monk Watson's Professor Cheer's Rope Vest - FAB Exclusive !

By special arrangements with Bill Watson and the Watson family, we are very pleased to announce a very special NEW product.

If you have ever performed the Professor Cheer's Rope routine you know how difficult it can be to keep the rope 'organized'. For over 40 years this effect was a staple in Monk's act and Bill's as well. This special vest was devised by Monk's daughter, Marnie for use in Monk's stage act.

Today is Father's Day and I pay tribute to Rick, a man who is the rock of the family.

To describe Rick one must conger many adjectives. He has a personality that is charming and debonair with a little kookiness thrown in. A heart of gold that would much rather give than receive, he has overseen and guided the family through many rough times and always celebrated the good times. Rick is the most positive person I know. He is always encouraging and supporting me and the kids to reach for our dreams. He sees the silver lining and can turn a bad situation into a positive one.

A magician/ventriloquist by trade and owning the family Magic Shop, Rick knows no stranger. He has the ability to put people at ease and draw them into the world of magic - his world of magic - where there is no stage, flashing lights and loud music, but rather wooden floors, and vaudeville acts; he recreates an era when the magician had only himself to make the "magic" seem real. Over the years I have sat in the audience, stood backstage, or simply stood across the room of the shop and witnessed Rick create smiles and produce laughter from people of all ages. There have been many many times I have clapped to the point my hands hurt, or laughed at the same routine till my eyes water.

Rick is a wonderful father and grandfather. He has seen the kids through illnesses, bad dreams, doctor and teacher appointments, broken hearts, numerous bumps and bruises, and sibling spats - just to name a few. He has and will always strive to instill the kids to do "the right thing" - to have proper morals. In that the kids are grown and out on their own - I can see Rick's life teachings in each of them. As a grandfather, a child can't ask for anything better! Rick is a fun grandpa that plays, jokes, loves (and spoils) with his whole heart. There is no greater joy to me than to hear Rick and the kids or Lilly laughing together. 'Tis those simple things in life that bring the most happiness and produce the best memories. For these things and so much more, I love and wish Rick a Happy Father's Day. ~Lovey

A piece of magical history now makes it's way to our showroom...forever

Ever since my good friend Jerry Conklin passed away we have been making arrangements to bring his 'Castle Scenery' into the FAB Magic Showroom. But, we didn't have room. Thanks to Mike & Cindy Conklin we now have secured it and is now a part of our showroom. It is special because The Amazing Conklins toured with this for several years in the 1970's.

And...to make it even more special - it was handpainted by Neil & Jeanne Foster! Okay, so you now have another reason to come to FAB in August or anytime for that matter. Come see magical history and the new items FAB is releasing. Our shop is growing by leaps and bounds and business couldn't be better! We are now making additional plans to ramp up our product line (over two dozen new items on the way!)

Looking Back...........

At age 14 - 1972 -I watched Neil Foster demonstrate the "Find The Lady Cards" over at Abbott's. It was a Saturday in December and I was trying to figure out what to buy for Christmas. Unfortunately this was out of my reach $$ wise and Neil ended up talking my dad and I into buying a table - a table! Are you kidding me? I wanted a trick. But it was the best investment I ever made. Now that I look back it was the best decision I ever made. Now some 40 years later I take that same advice I received as a 'customer' and pass it on to my 'customers'. Neil was my inspiration growing up in the magic world. There never was or never, ever will be another 'Flawless Foster'. You can find bits of his performances on youtube.com

It's worth the time - believe me - we can learn a lot from those that came before us. Routining seems to be a thing of the past these days. It is refreshing however to see a young man or young lady come into the shop wanting to put a show together and not just offer a 'bunch of tricks'. Our doors and ears are always open and we are always here to help. We know not everyone can visit the magic capital of the world but give us a phone call - let US help YOU! Let's talk MAGIC!

Summertime . . . What Happened To Our Youth?

Yes, we are all getting older. In the middle of my 'spring cleaning' here at the shop and found this pic snapped on our old Kodak by my dad. Here is my sister Susan and my mom sitting in my friends trailer on Blackstone Island in the summer of 1965. It was my very first visit to Colon some 46 summers ago.....and was a hot, humid week.The mosquitoes were big enough to pick you up (still are!)

To my wife and kids who put up with me some 30 years later dragging them up to Colon every year

(at least twice) I can't believe you put up with me - I remember changing my daughter Ashley's diaper on a fish cleaning table in one instance - all of us packed into the back of a Ford Escort - 4 kids and two adults!

What a person will do to find Shangri Lai . . . . .

I enjoy the people of this community and hope in some small way we are contributing to it's growth. I am honored and priveleged to have been asked to be the keynote speaker at this year's Colon High School Commencement on Friday, May 27th. Thanks to high school principal Debra Swartz for asking me.

My parents first introduced me to Colon and Magic in 1965. I am sure they had no idea that magic and Colon would play such a major role in my life. I am one of the lucky people on this earth. I knew what I wanted to be since I was 7 years of age and remember telling my mom and dad that I would someday live here. Dreams DO come true. . . . . . . . . . My mother is still with us but my father passed away in 1978. I just wish he could have been around to see what all of this has become.

...but then perhaps he DOES know.........

Krag Ryal & I just returned from a taping of Hardcore Pawn seen nationally on TRU-TV. The 'magical' episode will be aired within the next few months and will keep you updated on when it will be telecast. A fun cast that loved magic - BUT we couldn't sell 'em a darn thing - not even a vintage sleeve bouquet (and they thought it was a feather duster !) All in all a great bit of fun and will bring some national attention to Colon, Michigan and FAB Magic!

For the past several months customers have asked us "when are you going to put out another catalog?" To be quite frank catalogs are becoming a thing of the past and products change and/or added almost daily. Our websiteboasts nearly 5,000 items but I am one those older traditional magicians who still enjoys thumbing through the old catalogs...there is a lot of great stuff there!

After much pondering and consideration we have decided to put together a combination catalog / history of Colon, Michigan. It will be a collector's edition hard cover book available this fall with loads of photos and stories about Colon,magic and magicians. Stay tuned for more details.

Michigan Magic Day A Resounding Success!

What a terrific time we had at Michigan Magic Day! 118 magicians were present for the activiites on April 30th at the beautiful Tibbit's Opera House in Coldwater, Michigan. Over 50 participated in the Nite B4 Party on Friday. The evening show was a big hit and drew a standing ovation at the end which was the icing on the cake! We can't wait until next year - Ring 54 in Lansing will be the host and we are sure it will be a great time!

What a terrific day in Springfield, Illinois! Great to see so many old friends and meeting new ones as well. Fellow Colonite and magic nut Ron Carnell and I made the journey to Lincoln Land on Friday. Such a nice town and full of nostalgia. The theater is just a city block from the Abraham Lincoln birthplace.

My hat is off to Jeff Harpring & Eldon Roark for working their 'tails' off to make sure everyone was happy!

I can't believe it. My little granddaughter Lilly ( 1 of 2) is 4 years old this weekend. I remember when she was just a few months old I would bring her down into the magic shop and let her bounce around in her playpin. Now she is "in charge" LOL when she visits - greeting customers and changing my OPEN sign to CLOSED at night.

A few weeks ago while visiting a customer came in with some small children. I was working in the shipping area and she said "grandpa customers!" - when I came up front to greet them she told them " you need to sit here at the stool - grandpa is going to show you some magic tricks and you are going to buy them!" and yes, they did buy lots of magic - she was my 'salesman' that day...did her uncle Cory proud for sure.

Life is short. I learned today of the passing of Gene Zimmerman in Elkhart, Indiana. Gene and his family lived in their lake cottage just a few doors down from us in Columbia City, Indiana. It was ironic that he was also a magician. He and his twin brother were known as 'The Zim Twins' and peformed at functions all over central Indiana in the 50's. He used to recall stories of meeting my idol Percy Abbott and how he helped them put their show together. I bought my first magic table from him. It was home made but cleverly designed and I used it for several years. He and his wife Diane came into the shop a few times and always offered an ecouraging word.

Gene was a family man first and their family,ours and the Davis' were a close knit group growing up at the 'lake'. He was a gentle man and his friendship will be missed.

My new hire for the week - this little secretary keeps me in check this week. My granddaughter Lilly took time out from her busy (?) schedule to put out the latest monthly numbers - er..uh...well - Curious George seems to be helping her with her math. Hmmmmmmmmmmm now it looks good but maybe just a little more experience will qualify her for a full time position. She is also my official sign turn around-er - to show the folks we are OPEN or CLOSED. She hasn't asked for a raise as of yet but perhaps a few pieces of chocolate will be incentive enough for a few days.

Where does the time go? She is quickly growing up - having been raised to know 'the magic shop' and our customers on a first name basis makes grandpa very proud :) My son Cory, who is now in the Navy, got his magic start here too - my main counter guy - now serving the United States and pulling a few card tricks on fellow officers. BIG NEWS coming from the Magic Capital - we aren't releasing any details or hints....just keep an eye out here and on our sites for details ......

The Groundhog & I need to have a talk . . . .

This has been a winter to remember - or - forget. A massive ice storm hit the Colon and surrounding area this past Sunday. Most residents didn't have any power including us. But slowly but surely the electricity is coming back on. These are views from my back yard and across the street from the shop.

Camped out in the shop for three nights - man, I love my job but this is a bit over the top!

Just think in 6 months August will be here. It will hot and humid and. . .

Our son, Cory, turns 22 years old today. It seems like it was just yesterday when I was bouncing him on my knee and watching an I.U. basketball game. He is all grown up now and proud member of the United States Navy. We couldn't be prouder of him and I know he will be successful in whatever he does.

I still miss my 'guy' behind the counter demonstrating the latest and greatest tricks. God speed to you son. I love you....Dad

This Weather Is For The Birds - Really!

You just never know who is going to visit the shop :) A most interesting visitor today - a beautiful Mute Swan sitting at our doorstep this morning caused quite a bit of excitement. I am not sure if he/she wanted a specific trick that wasn't in stock but regardless we finally coaxed him away from the door where it promptly landed in the middle of the street. Thanks to our fearless police chief Mark Brinkert and some 'shooing' tactics we finally encouraged the bird to fly away before it ended up in harms way.

What a beautiful bird. I think it's a bit big for our dove pan though.....

I Want To Wash My Hair In Snow....well Maybe NOT!

The Magic Capital Is Covered In Snow. It is a beautiful site if you are on the INSIDE. I decided to 'camp' out at the shop for the next few days. It gives me the opportunity to get a few things done I otherwise wouldn't have time for. But I took a little time this evening to enjoy this snowy scene. It certainly brings back memories of the blizzard of 1978. Before long the sun will be out and it will be springtime and this will just be a memory. This photo taken in the heart of downtown Colon in the middle of this year's blizzard.

My good friend Bill Rauscher has just published a DVD on the life of Howard Thurston called, "When Thurston Came To Town" - See it HERE - Comes complete with book and DVD. This is a must have if you are a magic history enthusiast.

In the midst of putting together the new magic display at the Colon Historical Museum we ran across this. This is quite a find - Thurston Presents His Oriental Mystery Bured Alive at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn, New York on October 30th - 1927! It's in great shape and will be on display at the museum.

This is our final blog for 2010 and I want to personally thank all of our loyal customers for their business and most importantly, their friendship over this past year. To our employees, Al Littlejohn who is the finest woodworker in the area and can manufacture anything I ask of him. He has been with me for 8 years now and his expertise constantly amazes me. A big special thanks to Indra Sanford, our #1 Seamstress who has been a part of the FAB family for 6 years now. To Emmanuel Yoder our metal smith, to My Dear Friend Mark Davis who is always there to lend a hand whenever I need artwork. I cannot forget Krag & Carol Ryal who have become dedicated to this company and it's ideals. Their friendship and committment is second to none. Thanks to Cindy Conklin who steps in and helps out in the showroom and is always there when I need her. Thanks to my family - and to my mom and the memory of my dad who understood why I love magic and why it has become such a passion. To the residents of this community who I have come to know and love. As you can see our rabbit 'mascot' is inside where it is nice and warm. It's been snowing here - that first magical snow of the season. It is light and fluffy and reminds me of a snow globe. Looking out over the village with all of the Christmas decorations hung it certainly makes one stop and reminesce of Christmas' past. All of the family and friends who aren't with us anymore. But, I also look to the future as well and to all of the wonderful friendships that will come with 2011. I hope you are taking some time to enjoy the holiday season with friends and family. It is a very special time indeed.

This picture was taken this past summer. Where has the year gone? So much has happened. We moved the store across the street which was a major undertaking to say the least. But thanks to a lot of good friends and our employees who pitched in the transition was about as smooth as one could hope for.

So much to be grateful for. A customer said to me the other day "You are working too much !" I responded - "This isn't work! I am having the time of my life. " This is everything I ever dreamed of and then some.

I have so many people to thank - Cheryl and the kids have always been there and supported me even when I am sure they thought I was a little over the edge :)

To all of our employees - they have made this year a 'special' one for me. They have stood by me for the past 8 years and their allegiance to me and this company never wavered. It is their craftsmanship that makes this company look good. I couldn't have done it without them. As we make plans to expand our Colon location and venture into new cities in 2011 I sit back and look all that is around me. I am not only inspired but envision great things not only for this company but for Colon as well. Once again, I see a village that is thriving and taking advantage of it's existence as THE ONE AND ONLY Magic Capital Of The World! Doug Henning - A Slice of Magic History

Here is my granddaughter Lily on our loading dock standing next to the Doug Henning 'Things Go Bump In The Night' that just arrived along with nearly a dozen illusions - of course I am thrilled to have it here and yes, it could be yours! It comes completely crated and ready to ship FOB Colon, Michigan. It is a unique piece of magical history and in very nice condition.

Maybe it's just me but I yearn for those wonderful tv specials and the big stage shows. Perhaps...just perhaps...those days will re-emerge once again...I can only hope :)

Changing Seasons . . .

Where has the summer gone ? This is a view from my deck and for the first time in a long time I can see the St. Joe river. During the spring and summer I could only hear it's babbling sounds and the fish jumping. Now, the deer and wild turkey ( and a few fox) make their way into the backyard. After a long day at the shop it is nice to come home and relax with a cup of coffee and listen to ....well..nothing :) Only a five minute jaunt from the magic shop, this is my slice of heaven.

As we make preparations for the upcoming busy holiday season I have to remind myself that sometimes I need to slow down and enjoy what God and nature has given us. It's too easy these days to get lost in the internet, check our cell phone every hour, watch all of the satellite tv shows.

Now, where is that second cup of coffee :)

After tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, my oldest son, Lee, is on his way home :) I can't express into words how very proud we are of him. It's been a long journey and I know he will be glad to have his feet firmly planted on American soil. We are one of the lucky families who get to see their loved ones return safely. Our hearts ache for those who did not make it home.

With Veteran's Day on Thursday we ask everyone to stop, take a moment, and remember those who have served in all of our wars - past and present. It's our freedom they are protecting.

It is always a fun time of the year especially when you can share it with your granddaughter! Yep, Lily is almost 4 years old now and Halloween is so much fun - especially at the magic shop. She loves greeting the customers and showing them her 'latest' new trick. Al gets a kick out of her especially after he finishes a project and brings it in and she shows him 'her' latest new effect :)

4th Annual DAY OF MAGIC!

On Saturday, October 30th FAB Magic hosts it's 4th Annual DAY OF MAGIC here in Colon. Our showroom will be open 9:00 am - 4:00 pm with 20% $ALE all day. Cash & Carry ONLY! At 12:00 noon Michael Knight from Toledo, Ohio will be blindfolded and he will attempt to drive through downtown Colon using his extra sensory skills.

At 1:00 pm FAB Magic will be hosting a FREE Magic show here at the shop/showroom. We are asking for a donation of a can/box of non-perishable food to be donated to the Colon Food Pantry.

At 7:00 pm - FAB is sponsoring NITE OF MAGIC at the Riviera Theater in downtown Three Rivers, Michigan featuring the magic and illusions of Justin Holbrook, Rick Fisher & Riley Rabbit, and Krag Ryal. Tickets are $5.00 in advance or $7.00 at the door.

Yep, that's Jerry C on the right (ca 1970's) - We believe that is Jeff Boyer & Jim Fitzsimmons who are the lucky recipients of Harry's signature. The Conklins have hosted annual parties at their residence during magic week for over 25 years!

Meet "Joey". As I work with the Colon Historical Society to improve the new magic displays, you find 'treasures'. This is one of them. "Joey" was Percy Abbott's ventriloquist figure and he performed with him overseas and here in the United States. As I held him I couldn't help but wonder if he could really 'talk' what stories he could tell about the people, places and events that have shaped his existence. If only 'dummies' could talk - and then again - maybe they can.

'Joey' used to tell Perc - " Be careful what you say or I'll spit in yer eye!" and then without warning 'Joey' would proceed to spit a stream of water into the audience. I can just imagine the reaction.

"Houdini" Is Gone . . . .

"Houdini" is gone. Oh I realize the REAL Harry Houdini passed away in 1926, for many of us - Tony Curtis WAS Houdini. Growing up without cable tv, our family owned one television that once in a while, if the attennae was pointing in the right direction and there was just enough cloud cover, we could pick up old movies on WTTV-4 out of Indianapolis. Every week found me scouring the TV Guide looking for HOUDINI starring Tony Curtis & Janet Leigh. If I was lucky enough I could see the whole movie through the 'fuzzy airwaves'. This was my only connection to magic for the longest time.

I can even remember one year when I couldn't see it because of the distortions and I sat my old reel-to-reel tape recorder next to the tv speaker and recorded most of it so I could at least listen to the words and music whenever I wanted. Those were the days. . .

Whether you agree with the movie's authenticity or not it was inspirational to a lot of aspiring magicians. So here's to you Tony Curtis - thank you - we will miss you.

Here on Labor Day weekend it is nice to relax a bit in the shop before the busy season begins. I am very fortunate indeed to have so many good friends here in Colon. Bill Watson, my second "dad" is taking some time out to show my granddaughter Lily how to draw a picture of a butterfly. After that we are off to the zoo and looking forward to spending some quality time with her - she is three years old and going on ...10!

Where do I start? First let me thank all of those who attended and I deeply appreciate your wonderful comments. It makes all of the hard work worth while. Next I want to thank my staff. Without them there is no way we could have served the hundreds of customers who walked into our store: Krag & Carol Ryal, Mark Davis,Syd Abbott, Sam Durocher, Cindy Conklin & Erica Brown. They did everything I asked and then some. I appreciate all of you and thank you from the bottom of my heart for making Magicelebration 2010 a complete success as we set sales records all four days! Taking a break from all the 'rush' before magic week my granddaughter reminds me of the simple things that we take for granted. Lily is so proud to rid herself of the yikes..shall I say it...binkie (also known as pacifier) Grandma took her to the post office to mail it to the "Binkie Warehouse" where it will no doubt be recycled into other 'binkies' or land in the 'binkie' landfill. Nevertheless, this made me smile :) So, when I get a bit frustrated all I have to do is look at this photo and know there is always 'hope' :)

Saturday Shows Are So MUCH FUN!

Our Saturday afternoon shows here at the shop have really proven to be a FUN time for both children and adults. Over 20 folks enjoyed yesterday's program. I don't know who has more fun - me or the audience :) - I have been on the road quite a bit performing and haven't been able to stage a Saturday show every week but beginning this fall we will have shows every Saturday with guest performers! 4th Of July In The Magic Capital!

Man, what a celebration! Colon's 4th of July parade and festivities are certainly a highlight of the summer and this year's activities were no exception. The day started early as Kim Morgan and I assembled the sound system and made sure everything was in place for the 11:00 am parade. Chamber of Commerce President Edith Doenges and Sparkles committee deserve a round of kudos for organizing this event. This year marked the return of the 'wart hogs' and they flew over the the town to thunderous applause! My two sons were honored, as well as the other enlisted troups in this area. Thanks boys - you make dad proud!

FAB Magic staged a new location grand opening and we had standing room only PLUS! A very successful day and we thank all those that came in including magicians from Ann Arbor and Detroit who especially made the trek to Colon. We stayed til late Saturday evening as business was brisk and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves immensely. The new location here at 212 East State Street has been a blessing in disguise and retail sales have hit all - time highs the bast three weeks. They say everything happens for a reason - I am true believer of that now!

National Magic Day at The Riviera!

For the past three years FAB Magic has hosted "A Day Of Magic" during National Magic Week in October. It's a NEW tradition here in Colon attracting hundreds of tourists and media for this event. This year we are going all out with a surprise event during the day here in Colon followed by all types of fun and trick or treating and immediately following the day's events we are hosting "A Night Of Magic!" We have secured the beautifully renovated Riviera Theater in downtown Three Rivers for a Spectacular Magic Production beginning at 7:00pm, Sataurday ~ October 30th.

Tickets in advance will be $5.00 - with tickets at the door available (if there are any left) for only $7.00.

A family fun day and evening! We will keep you updated on the latest and who we have coming to perform. So much happening in the Magic Capital Of The World - I can't keep up...now where is my secretary?

Whew! We are finally back up again :)

I love old buildings and that certain 'feel' they have. But I gotta tell you when you have to start from scratch it can wear on your nerves a bit :) The building had to be completely re-wired and plumbed so we could have all of our computers and telephone systems in place. Today I can say we are now in and assembled, back to business and we have rightsized our operation so now it runs smoother and more efficiently. Here are some pics of the new showroom. Al and the gang are busy working out the details down at the new workshop. This building allows for a small woodshop and then our larger operation has been moved to a building here in town that gives us more room to build all of those great FAB items.

We appreciate your patience in this transition period and we think you will be in for a real treat when you come to visit our location here in Colon! In the middle of all this I have just negotiated bringing in another magic estate and our New Lamps For Old program has been a tremendous success! Old Tyme Fun In The Magic Capital

A few months ago we arranged for a traveling old tyme car group to come to Colon. Friday the old cars were lined up and made their way to Curly's for a bite to eat and then came by the shop for a little magic followed by an evening show I performed for them in Three Rivers.

They had a wonderful time and several of them are looking forward to coming to magic week in August!

These cars are absolutely beautiful! Maybe I will ask Santa Claus for one ;)

The Dream - continues . . . . . . .

It's the little things that pop up every now and then that make you realize what you are doing is all worth while. Thanks to my mom and aunt who recently found this in some old scrapbook. I was 10 years old at the time and decided back then to open my own "magic company".

This is my first catalog - they were all hand printed and illustrated and sold for .05 - As I look back some 40+ years later I now understand why I continue this journey and thank God and my parents for letting me spread my wings even then to pursue a dream. My dad has been gone almost 32 years and I remember the vacations here in Colon. This is where I always wanted to be.

And now our company is starting a new saga in Colon with a new building and lots of ambitious plans. We are adding to our in-house staff of dedicated craftspeople and reaching out even further by opening branch stores in select parts of the United States and yes, even Australia!

Those of you that know me understand why I do all of this. I love magic - and I believe it's heart and soul lies in the magic shop wherever it may be located. We look forward and beyond and grow our operation yet I still look back and remind myself - it was in Colon that I first 'believed'.

FAB Magic - A New Home In The Magic Capital!

We've kept this under wraps for some time now but it's official. This is our new facility here in Colon - across the street and down a block. The showroom size is actually larger than before and will be equipped with a modern stage and performance area. We have better visibility here and we will also be adding some outdoor furniture as well so visiting magicians and tourists can enjoy the outdoors as well.

Yes, we have entertained two offers to move our complete operation and yes there were incentives on the table but NO we are NOT leaving Colon! This place is still near and dear to my heart. They say magic shops are 'near death'. I don't believe it! We are in the process of looking to open three additional branches - in the western and southern United States along with an Indianapolis store. This doesn't happen overnight but we are working on the plan as we write this blog.

We still believe that magic shops are a viable operation and we are putting money where our mouth is. You will find more FAB produced products on our site in the next few weeks - and we will boast over 5,000 items with all types of magic,books,dvd's and lots of used magic. An estate is on it's way and should be here by the end of next week.

There is one constant in business - change. And we are certainly taking a new approach. We welcome any ideas or comments.

Branching Out

We have been approached by two cities regarding the expansion of FAB Magic. Some say we would be crazy to open magic shops in this economic environment especially when the internet is so popular. But, I believe after careful thought and study that there IS a place for the magic shop - a gathering place for the magician to learn and teach. Magic shops are closing at an alarming rate.

It's a tough business but these brave folks who have taken the gamble did it because they love magic not because they want to make millions of dollars. I have watched young magicians come into the shop here in Colon for seven years now. Some have pursued magic - others have found a different following. Young guys and gals making their mark in magic already - Alan Smola, Justin Holbrook, Doug Gancer, Savannah Durocher, Trino Schinariol (the last three just placed first, second and third place at the recent Michigan Magic Day), and several other youngsters who have found a real passion with magic. I applaud them and for those new magicians who have yet to appear on the horizon.

Social networking on the internet is great and it is a wonderful place to learn - but it misses the 'human' touch. Real magicians getting together with other magicians to critique and share. Isn't this what it is all about?

We have some ambitious plans and lofty goals here at FAB and so far we have been able to live up to them. But, there is plenty of work and improvement to be done and we are on top of it. My vision: branch shops across the United States selling FAB quality magic. It's an investment in the future of not only our company but for the future of magic. New and wonderful things are about to happen here in Colon - I am not letting the cat out of the bag. You will just have to watch this blog to see what happens :)

In the meantime, we all have a responsibility to 'grow' magic and give something back. Let's start right NOW!

IMPOSSIBLE ! COINS THRU GLASS

We have been working on this effect for 14 months - tweaking and improving on a Jack Hughes effect. Four half dollars vanish and then reappear in a shot glass which earlier had been covered with a drinking glass.

Lots of tender loving care went into the development of this effect. Al Littlejohn, our shop supervisor, took this one under his wing and there was a time when we just left it alone - and came back to it. Finally the bugs have been worked out and it's ready for market. These are all hand made and the price is affordable! You will love it!

There is so much happening here at FAB Magic we don't know where to start! Above see one of two original Bill Neff tables that will be for sale during magic week from the Roy Huston collection. These rare tables can by YOURS but you have to visit Colon during magic week to bid on them!

Also, this week we have introduced our new IN-STOCK GUARANTEE! Internet dealers list thousands of items on their website - some available - some not. It's the same old story. You buy 6 items and 4 of them are back-ordered. The online dealers have little or NO inventory so they have to rely on the various wholesalers to provide them with product - until they find out it's not available or on back-order which can take weeks. Yes, I am the first to admit we were one of them. NO MORE! Beginning April 15th if the item is NOT in stock our new live inventory feature will show just what we have on hand in our store - not what is available from the wholesalers.

Some have told me this is radical thinking? No - just fair and only makes good business sense. You, the customer are the winners - knowing you will receive ALL of your merchandise in a timely manner. We aren't carrying most of the imported 'junk' that is floating out there. I have spent too many hours returning items that are poor quality. It is time to stop the madness NOW! I have lost a dear friend and magic is poorer because of his passing. Jerry Conklin and his 'Amazing Conklins' traveled the USA and Canada with their full evening show for nearly 40 years. I first met Jerry when we arrived here in Colon and he was one of the first to greet us and welcome us to the magic capital. My life has been enriched because of knowing this wonderful man. We used to sit around and talk magic non stop for hours on end.

He is in a better place now and they are having one hell of a show up there . . Jack Gwynne, Neil Foster, Harry, Percy and alongside his wife, Shirley, they are knocking 'em dead. Break A Leg My dear friend.

We are so fortunate to have Al Littlejohn as our project coordinator. His vast skills in woodworking have enabled us to provide quality products to our customers. He hates to have his picture taken but I snapped this just as he was working on an illusion base for a customer. Al takes pride in his worksmanship and I have learned so much from him these past seven years. As we add a few more woodworkers to our staff to handle the tremendous volume of work we have in front of us, I have the utmost confidence his superior knowledge will rub off on the other guys. My dear friend Jerry Conklin celebrated his 82nd birthday about a week ago and now he is fighting for his life. I spent the morning with him and his wonderful family today and we all know the end is near. Before I left I asked Jerry if there was anything I could do for him. He replied ".. . . . keep the magic going in Colon"
